Your AI Is Not My AI

Why the best AI tool is the one that fits how you actually work

Somewhere right now, someone is recording a YouTube video called "The BEST AI Tool in 2026 (It's Not What You Think)". Someone else is posting a tier list on Reddit ranking every model from S to F. A third person is writing a blog post with a definitive answer to which AI assistant you should be using.

They are all wasting your time.

The comparison trap

The internet loves a competition. Claude vs ChatGPT vs Gemini vs whatever launched last Thursday. These comparisons treat AI tools like smartphones, as if there is an objectively superior device and everyone else is settling. Run some benchmarks, compare the specs, declare a winner, move on.

This framing is wrong in a way that actually costs people time and money.

AI tools are not phones. They are more like musical instruments. A piano is not better than a guitar. A guitar is not better than a drum kit. The question is not which one scores highest on some universal metric. The question is which one makes sense for the music you are trying to play, with the hands you actually have.

I have watched people switch AI tools three times in six months because someone on the internet told them a different model was "better". Each time, they lost their workflow, their built-up context, their muscle memory for prompting, and spent weeks getting back to the productivity level they had before the switch. All because a benchmark said the new model scored four points higher on a maths test they will never take.

Different brains, different tools

Here is what the comparison videos never account for: people think differently, work differently, and need different things from their tools.

I write code in PHP, Python, C#, and JavaScript across a sprawling set of internal business systems. I also write policy documents for council meetings, blog posts about AI, and training plans for half marathons. No single AI model is "best" for all of that. But over time, I have found tools and workflows that fit how my brain works across those different contexts. Someone else, with different skills, different work, and a different way of thinking, would rightly make completely different choices.

Consider three people, all using AI regularly, all making sensible decisions.

A secondary school teacher uses ChatGPT because the interface is simple, the mobile app works well for planning lessons on the bus, and the free tier covers most of what she needs. She has no interest in API access or system prompts. She needs something that helps her generate differentiated worksheets and explain concepts at varying reading levels. For her, the "best" AI is the one with the lowest barrier between the idea and the output.

A freelance data analyst uses Claude because he works with long, messy datasets and needs a model that can hold a large context window without losing the thread. He has built a library of detailed prompts for specific data cleaning tasks. Switching models would mean rewriting and retesting every one of those prompts. The benchmarks are irrelevant to him. What matters is that the tool handles his actual workload reliably.

A privacy-conscious journalist runs a local model on her own hardware. The output quality is lower than the commercial options. She knows this and accepts it because her sources trust her with sensitive information, and sending that information to a cloud API is not a trade-off she is willing to make. For her, the "best" model is not the smartest one. It is the one that stays on her machine.

The skill shapes the tool

There is another dimension the comparison culture ignores entirely: your existing skills change what a tool can do for you.

Someone who can write clear, structured prose will get better results from any AI model than someone who cannot, because they can evaluate and edit the output effectively. Someone who understands databases will use AI for code generation in ways that someone without that background simply cannot, not because the tool is different but because the person using it is different.

This means two people using the same model, on the same subscription tier, with the same prompt, can get wildly different value from it. The variable is not the tool. It is the person.

This is uncomfortable for the comparison industry because it means there is no universal recommendation. "Which AI should I use?" is not a question anyone else can answer for you, because the answer depends on what you already know, what you are trying to do, and how you prefer to work.

Your workflow is the product

The real value is not in any individual AI tool. It is in the workflow you build around it.

Over time, you develop an understanding of what your chosen tool does well and where it falls short. You learn how to prompt it for your specific tasks. You build templates, context documents, reference files. You develop instincts for when to trust the output and when to push back. That accumulated knowledge is worth far more than any marginal difference between models.

Switching tools because a benchmark changed resets all of that to zero.

This does not mean you should never switch. If a tool stops working for you, if the pricing becomes untenable, if something genuinely better arrives for your specific use case, then switch. But switch because the new tool serves your work better, not because someone on the internet made a tier list.

The monoculture problem

There is a broader concern here too. When everyone converges on the same "best" tool based on the same comparisons, we get a monoculture. One company controls the dominant AI interface. One model's biases and limitations become the default. One pricing structure dictates what access looks like.

Diversity in AI tools is healthy. It means different approaches to safety, different training philosophies, different pricing models, and different levels of openness. When a teacher uses ChatGPT, an analyst uses Claude, and a journalist runs a local model, that ecosystem is more resilient and more equitable than one where everybody uses the same product because a YouTuber told them to.

The "which AI is best" discourse actively works against this diversity. It funnels people toward a single answer when the reality demands many.

Finding your own fit

If you are still figuring out which AI tools work for you, here is what I would suggest. Ignore the tier lists. Ignore the benchmarks, unless you are doing the specific technical tasks they measure. Ignore anyone who tells you there is one correct answer.

Instead, think about your actual work. What tasks do you do repeatedly? What kind of thinking do you need help with? What are your constraints, budget, privacy, technical skill, time? Try a tool on your real work, not on party tricks and hypothetical scenarios. Give it a few weeks. Build some muscle memory. Then evaluate honestly whether it is making your work better.

If it is, keep using it. If it is not, try something else. But make that judgement based on your experience, not someone else's ranking.
